Press Release
“Return to Shawashkong”
There is a story told in the lore of Bancroft that there was a settler child who was taken away by an eagle from town. The settlers went up to the historic eagles nest lookout and destroyed all of their nests. Since that day the eagles have never returned to their traditional nesting grounds. Algonquin artist Sherry Crawford created “Return to Shawashkong” as a metaphorical invitation for the eagles to return to their traditional nesting grounds
Located under the historic Eagles Nest on the traditional lands of Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini Algonquin Nation. Sherry Crawford has created an ecological masterpiece weaving together art, ecosystem and story. Working with earth, habitat creation, berries, wild flowers and medicinal plants this installation invites visitors to immersive themselves as they walk through an abundantly vibrant ecosystem and art experience
This is the third of seven Reconciliation Gardens which are part of the Algonquin Aerial Art Gallery. We have created these living art installations so we can have a cultural space for Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini community members, locals and visitors to immerse themselves in Algonquin stories, teachings and vibrant ecosystems.
